Wim Hekstra joins Sun Life Hong Kong as Chief Executive Officer

Hong Kong, 13 August, 2013 – The Board of Directors of Sun Life Hong Kong and SunLife Financial Asia President, Kevin Strain, are pleased to announce that Wim Hekstra has joined Sun Life Hong Kong (SLHK).  Pending regulatory approval from the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, Wim will be named Chief Executive Officer.  

In this role, Wim will be responsible for growing the Sun Life Hong Kong business, which includes both an individual life and an industry-leading Pensions business.   “SunLife Hong Kong is a critical part of our growth strategy in Asia and we are focused on continuing to develop our business in this very important market,” said Kevin Strain, President, Sun Life Financial Asia. 

Wim joins Sun Life Hong Kong from another multi-national insurance company where he held senior positions including as Head of their China as well as Co-Head for the company’s Hong Kong and Macau business.  Wim has a strong understanding of the Hong Kong market particularly in the areas of agency distribution, brokerage and bancassurance. Wim also brings with him a wealth of expertise outside the insurance business, including a previous role as Managing Director of a multi-national consumer goods business in Hong Kong.

“I am confident that Wim has the right background and the expertise to build on our strong Hong Kong business and that he will be able to deliver on his mandate to grow Sun Life Hong Kong to a leadership position,” added Strain.  “Supporting him, Wim will have a strong management team who will work together with him to ensure that Sun Life continues to deliver the best products and provides the best service to its customers in Hong Kong.”

Wim will take over from Roger Steel who has recently been appointed President of New Markets & Business Development for Sun Life Financial Asia.   “Roger has been a great leader for our Sun Life Hong Kong business and has set a great foundation for the future of our business here,” added Strain.  “Roger’s new focus will be to grow Sun Life’s footprint in the fast growing ASEAN markets, an area where we believe SunLife can truly shine.  With Wim’s addition to our leadership team in Asia, I believe that Sun Life is well positioned to achieve our growth mandate for the region.”
