Inspired by the dramatic peaks of the Swiss Alps and the warm sunshine of Italy, Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto was one of the first concertos recorded in 1995 by a young Dutch pianist, Ronald Brautigam. Now, almost 20 years and 50 CDs later, it still sounds fresh and exciting in his hands.

There is high drama in Mozart’s 34th Symphony too, this time inspired by a desire to impress a potential employer in Munich. The rest of the programme focuses on Vienna with Beethoven’s delightful “Little” Symphony and music by Schubert which has long since outlived the original play it was written to accompany.

“Paul McCreesh was like a magician, bringing his precise mental image of the piece, with all its richness of tone colours, to life.” Kölnische Rundschau

“…his (Brautigam’s) decorative playing flowed “like oil”…” The Independent
